Aspen Events – Early Winter 2017


and the WINTER SKI SEASON begins! This is the snowy season of skiing and snowboarding and glittering events.

November 23: Aspen & Snowmass Mountains OPENING DAY
Also Thanksgiving – get a good day of skiing in and reward yourself with a delicious dinner!
November 24: ThanksJibbing – At the base of Aspen Mountain by the Gondola, watch talented locals compete on rails and other terrain from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
November 30: Biju’s Little Curry Shop – A 3 course dinner benefiting the Aspen Homeless Shelter at the Little Nell.
December 9: Buttermilk & Highlands Mountains OPENING DAY
December 9: Summit for Life – Head up Aspen Mountain on your snowshoes, skins, or crampons at 5:30. Dinner, band, and awards party await you at the top! The race benefits the Chris Klug Foundation and life-saving organ transplants. (You can take the gondola up to the Sundeck as well to join in the fun!)
December 9 & 10: Aspen’s Santa Fe Ballet’s The Nutcracker – With its whimsical twist on the classic story and a cast of over talented 60 performers, the production takes place at 2:00 and 7:30 on Saturday, and 1:00 and 5:00 on Sunday at the Aspen District Theater. 
December 12: Mountain Film presents On the Wall shorts: Climbing adventures at the Wheeler Opera House. Featuring award-winning short films “Brette,” “Young Guns,” “Boys in the Bugs” and “Lunag Ri,” On the Wall Shorts takes you higher than ever with a series of films focusing on the wild spirit of rock climbing. Special guest, professional climber Matt Segal, from the film “Boys and Bugs” will do a Q&A following the film. 
December 14: Aspen U Speaker Series: Holmes Rolston III on Nature, Value and Duty – an author, founding president of the International Society for Environmental Ethics, a founding editor of the journal Environmental Ethics and a founding member of the International Society for Science and Religion. 6:00 at the Limelight Hotel.
December 15-17: Snowmass 50th Anniversary – This is going to be a PARTY! Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Snowmass ski area! Friday 12/15 features $6.50 lift tickets at Snowmass (yes, you read that right!!!) with a retro party at Elk Camp and fireworks over Fanny Hill. Saturday 12/16 will have a Banana Days Scavenger Hunt and a Golden Gala in the evening. On Sunday 12/17, watch local athletes show off their park skills and enjoy a community picnic.
December 16-17: World Snow Polo Championships – From 12:00 to 4:00 each day at the Rio Grande Park, watch teams of horses and riders battle it out on the snowy field. 
  December 19-30: Aspen Academy Screenings – A film series highlights 20 acclaimed films to be considered for Academy Awards. 
December 20-31: 12 Days of Aspen – Over the holidays, Aspen is transformed into a Winter Wonderland. During the 12 Days of Aspen, downtown Aspen comes alive with free ice skating, holiday treats, carolers, visits from Santa, and New Year’s Eve fireworks.
Sardy House LightingDecember 23: A Charlie Brown Christmas Live on Stage – Your favorite Peanuts characters come to life in this all-new touring stage adaptation of Charles M. Schulz’s classic Emmy® and Peabody Award-winning animated television special – all set to Vince Guaraldi’s unforgettable music. Join the gang as they put on their own Christmas play and discover the true meaning of the season. A Charlie Brown Christmas Live On Stage is a present the whole family can enjoy! at 3:30 and 6:30 at the Wheeler Opera House. 
December 27 & 30: Audi Ajax Cup – The Audi Ajax Cup is one of the signature Aspen events. Skiers compete in teams in a dual Giant Slalom race, duking it out for the famed Gorsuch Cup. Each team is paired with a pro skier; this year’s pros include: Daron Rahlves, AJ Kitt, McKennis, Chris Davenport, and Casey Puckett. December 27 from 4-6 at Casa Tua features the “pro draw,” launch party, and live auction. The actual race takes place December 30 with activities, food, and drinks at Shlomo’s at the Gondola Plaza. Team race entries benefit the Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club.
December 26: ACES Apres – A holiday open house at Hallam Lake that features guided snowshoe tours around the preserve, crafts for kids, hot drinks, wine, snacks and more. Don’t miss the early evening “air show” of waterfowl coming to spend the night at the preserve, explore our nature center, and learn about ACES while you enjoy the warmth of a small bonfire, the pleasure of good company, and the beautiful setting of Hallam Lake! 
December 31: Jane’s Addiction at the Belly Up – A great show!!!!

December 31: New Years in Aspen – Ring in the New Year with two spectacular displays of fireworks over Aspen Mountain at 8:00 p.m. and midnight!
