Winter In Aspen

Aspen is perhaps most well-known for its skiing. With gorgeous mountain views, powdery snow, and countless world-class mountain trails, it’s easy to see why.

Want to see what all the hype is about? Whether you’re new to skiing as a whole or you’ve been at it for years but haven’t made it out west yet, you’re in the right place! We’ve put together a beginner’s guide to skiing in Aspen right here.

When is the best time of year to go skiing in Aspen?

Most people consider December through March to be the best time of year to go skiing in Aspen, especially with easy access from Aspen Pitkin County Airport. Skiing season starts as early as November and ends as late as April, depending on weather and snow conditions!

Many skiers and riders’ favorite time of year to go skiing in Aspen is March. The slopes aren’t quite as icy and cold, and the days get longer as springtime approaches! If you’re an experienced skier or an expert skier, you’ll find plenty to enjoy on the slopes near the Maroon Bells. You can also take a break at Ajax Tavern, located at the base of Buttermilk, or explore the Silver Queen Gondola for breathtaking views. If you’re a fan of warmer weather, March is your best bet. You can try for a trip in April, but if snowy conditions don’t hold up long enough, you’ll be disappointed. Snowmass Village also offers great options, along with ski schools for those looking to improve their skills.

During peak skiing season, there are also many fun après-ski activities to enjoy! Go out on the town with friends and meet other skiers, or enjoy the night back in your McCartney rental (maybe one with a hot tub?).

How expensive is skiing in Aspen?

Lift tickets depend on which mountain you’re traversing, for how long, and what month you decide to go! Skiing in Aspen is well worth the price for the world-class skiing adventure you’ll get to enjoy.

Generally, you can expect ski ticket prices to be in the range of $179-$254 per day, depending on where you book, how far in advance you book your ticket, and if you’re taking advantage of any specials or packages. Peak ski season (December-March) will be the most expensive, but you’ll also see the best conditions during those times.

Can I take skiing lessons in Aspen?

Yes! Aspen Snowmass has a ski & snowboard school to help you get up to speed. You can book a private lesson or choose to take lessons with a group of friends!

If it’s your first time out on the slopes, having a professional show you the ropes is a greate decision. The team over at Aspen Snowmass is committed to helping you understand the terrain you’re on and build confidence as you go!

Where are the best places to go skiing in Aspen?

Aspen Mountain

Also known as Ajax, Aspen Mountain has mostly advanced and intermediate trails. The mountain is walking distance from many of our rental units!

There’s a gorgeous lodge to relax in, as well as a restaurant at the peak of the top-to-bottom gondola. Check out the views from the deck while you enjoy a meal here!

Snowmass

Snowmass is the largest of the Aspen Snowmass Ski areas. There’s a little bit of something for everybody here, from beginner trails to intermediate turns and bumps to advanced-level terrain parks.

There are so many trails here that you could ski all day and never run a repeat! There are also many activities to enjoy down at the village once your runs are over.

Buttermilk

Are you a fan of tricks? Buttermilk hosts ESPN’s Winter X-Games every January and has a massive terrain park. Check it out to see some talented skiers and snowboarders doing their thing.

Buttermilk is not only for the pros, though! There are many beginner-friendly trails here, and skiers of all ages can have a great time.

Aspen Highlands

This mountain is definitely not one for beginners. Home to the renowned Highlands Bowl, many skiers make the long trek up to this famous trail and then tackle the advanced skiing terrain down it.

If you’re not up for the Highlands Bowl, don’t worry! There are plenty of other awesome trails to consider here, and the Cloud Nine Bistro is always serving up incredible food for a relaxing après ski meal.

What are the best beginner-friendly trails in Aspen?

Our best picks for a beginner-friendly ski trip would be Buttermilk and Snowmass. These mountains are large enough that they have a varied range of trails spanning all levels! Do your research before you head out on a trail, and be aware of the system used to scale difficulty. Don’t head out on a double black diamond before you’re ready (stick to the green circles if you’re a beginner…a blue square if you’re feeling brave).

Can I rent equipment?

You sure can! Four Mountain Sports has nine locations in the valley, offering ski and snowboard rental packages for all ages! Whether you need to rent for the whole family or just yourself, Four Mountain Sports offers great deals. They can also perform repairs on any equipment!
