Imagine spending your holiday in a charming alpine village, surrounded by pristine wilderness, mountains shimmering white with snow, trees sparkling with holiday lights, friends and families celebrating together, and outdoor activities galore. This is the soul of Aspen, and there is something special happening for people of any age.

For the lucky few who are fortunate enough to spend the holiday season in Aspen, activities and holiday cheer abound.

December is the kick-off to high season in this ski resort town. Aspen is a world renowned ski destination, and there is plenty to do and see on the mountain – but the fun doesn’t end when the lifts stop. When the mountain closes, the merrymaking continues in town. And even if you don’t ski, the list of events and activities to enjoy during your holiday get-away is boundless.

The majorities of the days the activities begin in the morning and continue throughout the day and into the night. There are several venues in town where the activities take place: The Wheeler Opera House, The Hotel Jerome, The St. Regis Hotel, and The Belly Up to name a few.

Samplings of special events worth considering for your holiday celebrations are:

On Thursday, December 20 from 4:30-5:30, don’t miss ice skating with Santa’s Elves at the St. Regis. Then head over to the Wheeler Opera house at 7:30 to the John Denver Christmas concert.

You will not want to miss a packed day of visits from Santa on Friday, December 21st.  The fun begins with Christmas cookie decorating and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus from 1-3:30pm at The Hotel Jerome.  After the sun sets, Santa will trade his sleigh and elves in for the night, and he’ll join the Aspen firefighters for a ride around town in a fire truck.  The classic Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens comes to life at The Wheeler Opera House. Showtime is 7:30; enjoy the journey and tale of the ghost of Christmas past, present, and future.

A Christmas Eve service on the 24th by Crossroads Church is held at the Wheeler Opera house. The Aspen Chapel, right outside of town, by the roundabout, holds three Christmas Eve services.

Always note that in Aspen, experiencing the culinary delights of the hotels and restaurants should be part of your Aspen holiday memories, and most are offering special holiday buffets and dinners.

The events and activities continue to a crescendo ending with ringing in the New Year Aspen style. Go out with a bang with two firework shows over Aspen Mountain at 8 and midnight. Prepare to be enchanted with “all things” Aspen.
