Experience River Rafting in the Roaring Fork Valley
Summertime in the valleys introduces a whole array of new activities for mountain fun. Enjoying time on the rivers and rafting is one of our favorite ways to spend the day! You can ride the waves of the rapids or make yours a float trip, just easing down with the current of the river. Time of year, river flows, and weather all contribute to the conditions that change daily. Consider whether you are looking for a mellow trip, an adrenaline rush, or a little of each.
You can raft or kayak on the Roaring Fork, the Crystal, and the Colorado rivers.
Each run is a special experience where you get to see the beauty of the valley, the fauna, birds (sometimes nesting), the geology, all from a unique angle. Paddle boarding is also popular in certain sections, but you will want to be realistic about your abilities. Lakes are more suitable for beginners until you master the art of paddle boarding.
Of course, we highly recommend going with seasoned raft guides. You will have a MUCH more enjoyable trip with professional guides who have all the proper equipment; Personal Flotation Device’s/life vests, helmets, even dry bags for some of the items you want to bring with you, but you don’t want to get soggy. They know the rivers, the iconic landmarks, the flows, and can tell you some epic river stories, most of which are true… or so they say. Often times they go down the river in a flotilla of watercraft, making the shared experience exciting as you watch the boats downstream going through a rapid area, and then cheering them on before it is your turn! Everyone celebrates in the end!
A water bottle, closed toe shoes or water shoes and sunscreen are all a must. Be prepared to get splashed and hang on to those hats! Did we mention the Personal Flotation Devices? Do not get in the river without one. When your boat pulls off to an eddy, sunny spot or a favorite swimming hole you will like having your life vest to take a little dip in the calm water.
If this is your first time rafting you should definitely put a river trip on the top of your bucket list. If you have gone rafting or kayaking you understand the adrenaline and excitement of it all and it is time to get back on the river! Then send us your pictures, we want to hear YOUR river story.
