You can’t have a true family vacation when your four-legged family members have to stay behind! Pets love visiting the Rocky Mountains, and having your pet with you will make your trip even more fun and comfortable. We’ve put together some tips for bringing your pet to the Aspen Area:
Take a Hike!
There are many trail systems and hikes suitable to any range of athleticism for humans and their furry counterparts. These trails are well maintained year round and popular to Aspen locals and tourists alike. Some local favorites for strolling with your furry family member include:
Smuggler Mountain – Located on the southeast side of town, Smuggler is an official off-leash area for dogs, making this intermediate hike for humans an open-space dog park, too!
Rio Grande Trail – This flat trail mimics the Rio Grande River through Aspen and down the entire Roaring Fork Valley. Easy walking and leashed-pet-friendly.
Snowmass Mountain – Thanks in large part to the welcoming uphill policy put in place by the resort, Aspen Snowmass is quickly becoming the U.S. mecca for uphillers, randonee, and touring. Uphilling is permitted at all four mountains, but Snowmass is the only resort that allows dogs during operational hours. Dogs must be leashed at all times, and a harness is recommended. If you’re ascending Snowmass during operational hours, be sure to stay visible at all times and keep to the side of the trails.
Ashcroft XC Nordic Trails – At Ashcroft Cross Country Ski, your pup is welcome to join you on 2 kilometers of pet-friendly public access trails.
Downtown Aspen is home to several other parks within walking distance, all of which provide a great setting to play fetch. They include Koch Park in the West End, about three blocks west of Wagner, Glory Hole in the East End, about three blocks east of the Gondola Plaza, and the Rio Grande Park, located just beneath the public library.
Pamper your Guy or Gal
CB Paws is a specialty boutique featuring gifts for dogs and the people that love them such as homemade cookies and plush beds. Rocky Mountain Pet Shop provides food, treats and a huge selection of dog toys, and now has a self-service dog wash to clean up your pooch after a long hike.
Stay in a Pet Friendly Vacation Rental
McCartney Properties offers a great selection of pet-friendly Aspen vacation rentals that your whole family will love! Our pet friendly properties are ready for you and your pet to visit any time of year.
We do recommend that you bring items from home that make your pet feel comfortable since some pets have a hard time adjusting to the change. Items we suggest are: food and water bowls, pet bed or blanket, leash and any special treat or toy your pet is used to having at home.
Should something go wrong, or if your dog needs a mid-vacation check-up, Aspen Animal Hospital is a quick jaunt from town, and offers a full array of veterinary services.
